Planning a backyard party in Central New Jersey? One of the most common questions we hear at SL Party Rentals is: “What size tent do I need?” Get it wrong and your guests are either crowded under a tent that’s too small — or you’ve paid for space nobody is using. This guide breaks it down simply so you can get it right the first time.

The Basic Rule: 10 Square Feet Per Guest

The industry standard for a standing cocktail-style event is roughly 8–10 square feet per person. For a seated dinner with tables and chairs, plan for 12–15 square feet per guest. Here’s a quick reference chart:

Guests Cocktail / Standing Seated Dinner Recommended Tent
Up to 20 200 sq ft 300 sq ft 10×20
Up to 30 300 sq ft 450 sq ft 10×30 or 20×20
Up to 40 400 sq ft 600 sq ft 20×20 or 20×30
Up to 60 600 sq ft 900 sq ft 20×40 or 30×30
Up to 100 1,000 sq ft 1,500 sq ft 40×40 or 30×50

Factor #1: Will You Have a Dance Floor or DJ Setup?

If your party includes a dance floor, DJ table, or bar area, you’ll need to add extra square footage. A standard 12×12 dance floor, for example, takes up 144 square feet that guests can’t sit in. Always size up if you’re adding entertainment equipment.

Factor #2: Round Tables vs. Rectangle Tables

Round tables (typically 60″ or 72″ in diameter) are great for conversation but take up more floor space per seat than 6-foot rectangle tables. If you’re using round tables with chairs on all sides, budget 15–18 sq ft per guest instead of 12.

Our popular 40-Guest Tent Package includes a 20×20 tent paired with round tables and chairs — perfectly sized for a seated backyard celebration for around 40 people.

Factor #3: Food Stations, Buffet Tables, and Gift Tables

Don’t forget the extras. A buffet table, dessert station, gift table, or bar area can easily eat up 100–200 sq ft of your tent footprint. If you’re planning any of these, either go up a tent size or place them just outside the tent perimeter.

Factor #4: Your Backyard Layout

In Central NJ, most suburban backyards have a mix of deck space, garden areas, and flat lawn. Before booking a tent, measure your usable flat area. Keep in mind:

  • Tent stakes require about 3–5 feet of clearance on each side
  • Trees, fences, and slopes can limit your placement options
  • Municipality rules in towns like Monroe Township, South Brunswick, and Old Bridge may require a permit for tents over a certain size

When you book with SL Party Rentals, our team will always review your space with you before delivery to make sure everything fits safely.

Factor #5: New Jersey Weather

Summer in Central NJ means heat, humidity, and the occasional pop-up thunderstorm. A properly staked tent provides excellent protection from both sun and rain. If you’re hosting in July or August, consider adding sidewalls to block wind and rain on three sides while keeping one side open for airflow.
